The luxurious Crystal Symphony dropped anchor for the very first time in Boracay earlier this year.

The ship which can hold up to 900 passengers, came from Benoa and Komodo in Indonesia and cruised the Sulu Sea. After Boracay, the ship, part of the fleet of Crystal Cruises, headed to Romblon, Kota Kinabalu in Malaysia, Bandar Seri Bergawan in Bruinei, South China Sea, and to the final stop, Singapore.

The Unhurried Vacation

On a cruise, for those who do not wish to disembark the luxury vessel, passengers can relax and enjoy the silent, slowed-down aspects of traveling at sea. No need to book every hotel and flight between destinations. The ship is their floating home. Perhaps they can chose to do wine tasting, daily tea service, and yoga instruction while taking in views of the sea.

According to Crystal Symphony hotel director Josef Matt, one of the best things about cruise travel is the gift of time. It’s a way to avoid many instances of traffic from airports to hotels. And speaking of hotels—what check-in time? No need to work around the usual after-lunch schedule and waste morning hours waiting to be welcomed into your room.

Leisure Central

A large cruise ship is a self-contained leisure complex. The Silver Shadow, a member of the Silversea fleet, although less than half the passenger capacity of Crystal Symphony, is still a spacious vessel with various recreational amenities. It has its own performance theater, casino, library, spa, cigar bar, and fitness center. Silver Shadow’s wine restaurant Le Champagne is the only Relais & Chateaux restaurant aboard a cruise ship—the dining experience here is so exclusive and coveted that passengers book their dinners ahead of the voyage.

Silversea Expeditions offers themed voyages for bird watchers, food lovers, divers, photographers, and wellness seekers. Some of its ships go as far as Antarctica. Passengers get off the main ship and transfer into smaller boats to navigate the waters. These tours are part of the cruise package.

More than 25 million people are projected to board cruise ships in 2017, according to Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA). Among these are millennials and Gen X-ers. This trend outlook is different from the tradition of cruise travel as a retirement activity—it's no longer just a way to kill time, but an engaging and invigorating form of travel.

Why are more people attracted to luxury ships and cruising in general? Some think of it as an all-in package. It’s a pre-arranged series of trips, with the butler-serviced aspects of a hotel staycation and the feeling of being at the center of the world.
