All manner of retired toys, from threadbare teddies to china dolls with flowing locks of real hair, can be found crammed into the Lilliputian Pollock’s Toy Museum in Fitzrovia. However, it’s best known as the home of the toy theater, and there’s an outstanding selection of framed examples on show, many of them produced by Benjamin Pollock, the 19th-century printer who devoted himself to making miniature replicas of West End productions.

Those hankering after a contemporary example should head to Pollock’s Toyshop in Covent Garden – its many treasures include a brand-new version of Hansel & Gretel, designed by Clive Hicks-Jenkins.
