Bleary-eyed after my long-haul flight, which included an unfortunate spell of travel sickness and the airline snapping the handle off my suitcase, I touched down in Bali in desperate need of relaxation. Mercifully, the Mulia melted my troubles away as soon as I set foot in its cavernous marble lobby. A flock of immaculate staff offered me a welcome blessing, placing a tuberose flower in my hair and sprinkling my cupped palms with holy water. My luck had clearly begun to change…

With newly relaxed muscles, I sunk into bed that night, swaddled in 400-thread-count Egyptian-cotton sheets, and was lulled into a blissful sleep.

Further pampering is available at the spa and wellness center, whose bespoke menus offer indulgent treatments rooted in Balinese and Western practices. Patrons of the Mulia Spa Experience can expect six hours of full-body restoration, beginning with an outdoor hatha-yoga session in the landscaped Meditation Area, soundtracked by soothing piccolos and tambourines.

You’ll then be whisked to the Wellness Suite to rid your skin of toxins in the steam-room before reducing its irritation in Asia’s first ice-room, illuminated by colored LEDs for deep relaxation. The Mulia’s skillful therapists advise switching between the two, as sudden changes in temperature have been shown to stimulate circulation, improve metabolism and boost the immune system. For the remainder of the day, settle onto a hammam table for your program of rejuvenating treatments, from a Himalayan salt scrub that leaves your skin feeling baby-soft to a Chi Nei Tsang massage, an ancient Chinese technique that stimulates and energizes the internal organs.

Counterbalance a spa day of abstemious (yet flavorsome) 300-calorie meals with more decadent fare by visiting the Café, one of the Mulia’s 12 restaurants and bars. Chefs are stationed at seven cooking theatres, prepared to whip up your favorite international cuisine just the way you like it, from succulent butter chicken and cheese naan at the Indian corner to zingy Chinese barbecued duck and Thai tom yum goong soup in the Southeast Asian section. Those with a sweet tooth will delight in the two interconnecting dessert-rooms, filled with a revolving display of homemade ice creams, a rippling chocolate fountain, and a candyfloss machine, dotted between dainty patisseries and macarons.

On my last day at the Mulia—dreading my imminent return to the relentless grind of city life—I stood under the open-air rainforest shower, the cascading water washing the last of my cares away. I savored the feeling of palm tree fronds grazing the top of my head and the noise of finches chattering animatedly above—the sights, sounds, and sensations of paradise.
