This Japanese Town Welcomes Cherry Blossoms Early Every Year

The most wonderful time of spring is just around the corner: cherry blossom season. As we speak, 8,000 cherry trees are already blooming in a town outside of Tokyo.

Most trees in Japan show off their blossoms (known as sakura to natives) between late March and early April. The Eastern Japanese village of Kawazu, however, welcomes spring before most of its neighboring towns—every single year.

Known as some of the earliest blooming cherry blossoms around Tokyo, these Kawazu-zakura flowers are beautiful rarities, and they're even more unique than the speed at which their buds bloom. These blossoms have bigger petals and a brighter, pink color.

Millions of tourists visit the town to see them during the annual Kawazu-zakura Cherry Blossom Festival. Here are some beautiful photos by these spring travelers:
