Jessica Kienle, head designer of Philux, tied the knot with Jesse Maxwell, an executive at Magsaysay Transport and Logistics, on Pangulasian Island in Palawan last year. She tells us all about the highlights of their engagement and stunning destination wedding.

Tell us how you and Jesse met.
We met in Paris in 2008, but we only started dating in when I had moved back to Manila. I barely knew Jesse before our first date, so I took a chance without any expectations. My first impression was that he was very kind. He is one of those people you meet who doesn’t have a bad bone in them.

Throughout the evening, I realized that he was very down-to-earth, humble, and modest. You could say that there were sparks almost right away. We enjoyed each other’s company on the first date, and we wanted to see each other every day
after that.

What do you appreciate most about your relationship?
We respect each other very much. When you respect someone, there is honesty, patience, caring, and understanding, and that’s really important in a relationship and in a marriage. Jesse was also very respectful toward my family, and to me it said a lot about him as a person, his values, and the importance of family to him.

How did he propose?
I remember feeling that it might happen soon, as there had been some hints a few months leading up to the proposal. But I had no idea that it would happen on a spontaneous weekend trip to Hong Kong. We had just gotten back from a hike, and we were both exhausted and ready for a nap. Out of nowhere, he took out a little black box with a ring, and began expressing his feelings to me… And then he popped the question! It was sweet, genuine, and emotional, and it could not have been more perfect.

Tell us about the highlights of your wedding.
On the welcome night before the wedding, we had a Filipino-themed barbecue dinner on Entalula Island in El Nido. At evening we were surprised by a live performance planned by my mother-in-law. It was an entire show based on the musical South Pacific, and she had my bridesmaids, groomsmen, and both our families be part of the cast! It was incredible and really touching to see the effort she and everyone put into it. Another beautiful and memorable moment was the ceremony itself. We had it on the beach, and the sun was setting just as we were reciting our vows. I will always remember that precious moment as we were saying “I do” to one another, surrounded by all this natural beauty and all of our loved ones. It was a truly magical moment.

Jesse and I love seeing new places and doing new things together, and I’m excited to go on more adventures as a married couple and eventually as a family someday.
