The tragedy occurred on a United Airlines flight. Maggie Gremminger, a passenger on the same flight uploaded a photo of the passenger saying, “I want to help this woman and her daughter. They lost their dog because of an @united flight attendant. My heart is broken.”

United Airlines has responded to the incident with the following statement:

“This was a tragic accident that should never have occurred, as pets should never be placed in the overhead bin. We assume full responsibility for this tragedy and express our deepest condolences to the family and are committed to supporting them. We are thoroughly investigating what occurred to prevent this from ever happening again.”

United has the highest rate of animal fatalities out of all U.S. airlines, with a count of 18. The airline was previously under fire for the death of a King Charles Spaniel named Lulu on a Houston-San Francisco and another of a giant rabbit named Simon on a London-Chicago flight. United also faced controversy after the violent dragging of passenger David Dao back in April 2017.
