Talk of the Town: Mark Zuckerberg, Starbucks' Straw Ban, and The Grid at Power Plant Mall

What people have been buzzing about this week.

1. Mark Zuckerberg nabs the spot as the third-richest person in the world.

The Facebook founder surpassed Warren Buffett and has joined fellow tech moguls at the top, Jeff Bezos (Amazon) and Bill Gates (Microsoft). According to Bloomberg, Zuckerberg’s net worth hit $81.6 billion last Friday. Buffett’s net worth has allegedly gone down due to his charitable contributions.

2. All 12 boys and their football coach have been rescued from flooded Northern Thailand caves after being trapped for more than two weeks.

On July 10, Thai and international divers made a final push to complete the rescue operation of 12 boys and their football coach who had been trapped in a cave for over two weeks.

The group is currently under observation at a local hospital’s isolated ward. Former Thai Navy SEAL Saman Gunan was the only casualty.

3. Starbucks will be completely straw-free by 2020.

Starbucks is looking to eliminate more than one billion plastic straws a year. The coffee company will start utilizing recyclable raised lip lids that resemble “sippy cup” lids in the fall, starting with stores in Seattle and Vancouver. Frappuccinos will still be served with dome lids, but with paper or compostable plastic straws.

4. The Grid Food Market opens at the Power Plant Mall.

Founder and curator Charles Paw  says his team went for a minimalistic approach for the stalls and avoided individual branding to keep the dishes as a focal point. The stalls will open in three phases, so only a few are currently in operation. However, you can already check out Bun Appetit for its lobster rolls and lobster mac and cheese, Workshop by Miko Aspiras and Kristine Lotilla for its 17-layer salted caramel chocolate cake and other decadent sweets, Le Chon for roasts by Happy Ongpauco Tiu, EDSA Beverage Design Group for coffee, cocktails, and flavored sodas.
