Matt Lauer May Lose His $9.2-Million New Zealand Farm

New Zealand regulators are reviewing whether the former Today show anchor violated the country's "good character" requirement.

Disgraced Today show anchor Matt Lauer's woes are far from over.

Lauer and his wife, Annette Roque, were spotted separately in the Hamptons Wednesday without their wedding rings, and Roque's father told the Daily Mail that "everyone feels betrayed" and "she is not going to stay with him and work it out."

Something the couple will need to work out, though, is what will become of the sheep and cattle farm in New Zealand that they reportedly agreed to lease earlier this year for $9.2 million.

Last week New Zealand’s overseas investment regulator said it was reviewing the agreement for the farm on South Island, since Lauer's alleged misconduct may violate New Zealand’s behavior clause.

"The Overseas Investment Office is aware that allegations have been made in relation to Matt Lauer and that he is no longer working for NBC News in the USA," Lisa Barrett, deputy chief executive of policy and overseas investment, told Page Six. "We are discussing this with his representative and are seeking further information."

New Zealand requires all foreign investors to be "of good character," and the country, which has recently become a popular destination for ultra-wealthy Americans, considers it a privilege for foreigners to control or own its assets. "A condition of the consent granted to Orange Lakes Ltd to purchase the lease for Hunter Valley Station is that the individuals with control of that company must continue to be of good character," Barrett added. (Lauer reportedly purchased the property under the holding company Orange Lakes Ltd.)

Lauer spent an estimated $9.2 million to lease the 27,000-acre farm, which is known as Hunter Valley Station. It includes more than eight miles of lakefront land bordering Lake Hawea and Lake Wanaka, plus another eight miles of riverfront along the Hunter River, according to Architectural Digest. In addition to an assortment of farm buildings and fishing huts, there's a five-bedroom house on the farm.

While this real-estate scenario plays out in on the other side of the globe, Lauer has reportedly been hiding out at his $33.5-million home in the Hamptons since his termination from the morning show.
