The richest couple in the world is getting a divorce. Jeff Bezos and his wife Mackenzie announced their split on Twitter in a joint statement. They had been married for 25 years.

"We want to make people aware of a development in our lives. As our family and close friends know, after a long period of loving exploration and trial separation, we have decided to divorce and continue our shared lives as friends," reads the tweet.

"We feel incredibly lucky to have found each other and deeply grateful for every one of the years we have been married to each other. If we had known we would separate after 25 years we would do it all again."

The couple married in 1993 after meeting at the hedge fund D.E. Shaw & Co. in New York. They have four children together.

"We've had such a great life together as a married couple, and we also see wonderful futures ahead, as parents, friends, partners in ventures and project, and as individuals pursuing ventures and adventures," the announcement continues.

Given Bezos's enormous wealth, the divorce proceedings are sure to be complicated, even if the couple parts on amicable terms, especially considering it is unclear if they had a prenuptial agreement. Per Forbes, the Amazon founder, chairman, CEO, and president is worth 136.4 billion, making him the richest man in the world.

The publication also reports that "Amazon's chief Jeff Bezos is the first person with a net worth surpassing $150 billion in the 3 decades that Forbes has tracked the richest Americans."
