Irvins Issues Apology After Dead Lizard Was Found In A Bag of Salted Egg Fish Skin
It was a rocky start for the new year for Singapore-based snack manufacturer Irvins Salted Egg Chips.
On December 29, 2018, Jane Holloway posted on Facebook about how her brother and mother were halfway through a bag of Salted Egg Fish Skin when they discovered a dead, deep-fried lizard among the chips. Hollaway wrote on her post: “OMG I can’t believe IRVINS Salted Egg is not purely salmon fish skin but also gecko! My poor brother and mum ate half the bag before they found this inside!!! So disgusting! How can this happen? This gecko was probably deep fried with the salmon skin by the looks of it.”

Holloway’s brother wrote to the brand over the holidays, and what began with a Facebook post ended with a Facebook post. On January 2, the brand issued a public apology signed by Irvin Gunawan himself. The prompt and sincere response said: “Quality control is one of the most important aspects of our company and we are always on our toes because our customers’ safety is everything to us. We really want to sincerely apologize to the customer and everyone who is affected by this incident directly or indirectly. We take full responsibility for the goods that we sell and everything in it. I have since personally contacted the customer and will continue to do so to make sure that she and her family is alright.”

Gunawan has also promised to investigate the issue as he admittedly does not have an explanation as to how the tiny reptile ended up in one of the bags of chips. He has also offered a product recall and refund for all Irvins' customers who feel uncomfortable with eating the salted egg snacks. And he has assured that all recalled products will be disposed of.
