Ellen DeGeneres and Pink Come to Meghan Markle and Prince Harry's Defense In Wake of Private Jet Controversy
Over the past few days, the British press began to report on a secret trip to France that Prince Harry, Meghan Markle, and baby Archie took. Headlines quickly focused in on their method of transport—a private jet—and a wave of criticism followed, condemning the apparent hypocrisy of flying private while professing to support environmental causes.
Then, Elton John stepped in. The musician revealed in a Twitter thread that the royal couple had in fact been staying at his home in Nice, and that he had provided the jet, too. However, he clarified, "To support Prince Harry’s commitment to the environment, we ensured their flight was carbon neutral, by making the appropriate contribution to Carbon Footprint™."
Elton also spoke out about the press's treatment of Meghan and Harry, comparing it to the scrutiny Princess Diana faced. "Prince Harry’s mother, Diana Princess Of Wales was one of my dearest friends," he wrote. "I feel a profound sense of obligation to protect Harry and his family from the unnecessary press intrusion that contributed to Diana’s untimely death."
The musician's defense of the Duke and Duchess seemed to open the floodgates, as more celebrities began to tweet in support of Meghan and Harry, and against the media.
Here, every high-profile figure who's condemned the criticism.
The comedian revealed that she and Portia De Rossi had met Harry and Meghan, and found them to be "down-to-earth, compassionate people." Ellen added that all the royal couple wanted to do was "make the world better," and they didn't deserve the media's attacks.
Portia and I met Prince Harry and Meghan in England to talk about their work on wildlife conservation. They were the most down-to-earth, compassionate people. While the singer didn't claim to have met the Duke and Duchess personally, Pink still felt inspired to voice her support. She tweeted that she was happy to see other celebrities backing them up, as "The way people treat [Meghan] is the most public form of bullying I have seen in a while. It’s out of control. Let’s all be a bit kinder, huh?"
I’m happy to see people coming to the defense of The Duke and Duchess of Sussex. The way people treat her is the most public form of bullying I have seen in a while. It’s out of control. Let’s all be a bit kinder, huh? Let’s show our children that it’s cool to be kind.— P!nk (@Pink) August 20, 2019
As a friend of the couple—and ambassador for Harry's charity Sentebale—the star polo player also came forward to support them. In a long comment on Elton John's original Instagram post, Nacho offered effusive praise of the "two great human beings."
"I will defend them and what they do and who they are for as long as I live," he wrote. "They are a treasure in today's society and we should be taking care of them and feeling inspired by them."
Harry and Meghan’s travel to Ibiza earlier in the month was also carbon neutral. @NetJets, one of the world’s biggest corporate jet operators, have been CO2 neutral since 2012 and have invested heavily in research to explore sustainable alternatives to fossil based fuels. https://t.co/XeFILCKPaq— Omid Scobie (@scobie) August 19, 2019
