The 'Debaters,' Ateneo de Manila’s Junior High School (AJHS) debate team, recently bested over 4,000 participants from over 50 countries around the world in the Global Rounds of The World Scholar’s Cup 2017 in Hanoi. They brought home a total of 98 medals—32 gold and 66 silver.

The annual five-day event brought together qualifying scholars from all parts of the world for an immersive experience that included scavenger hunts, keynote speeches, panel discussions, and The World Scholar’s Ball.

The Ateneo Debaters were composed of sixteen Grades 8-10 students from the junior high school and seven Grade 11 former AJHS Debaters from senior high school. The students were divided by age: the Junior category for 15 years old and below and the Senior category for 15 years old and above. As such the Seniors had an added challenge of competing with older scholars.

Participants also took part in the World Scholar’s Cup academic events with subjects such as science, literature, history, social studies, arts and music, and modern mythologies in the Scholar’s Challenge writing exam and Scholar’s Bee quiz bee. Other events included three round team debates and on-the-spot collaborative essay writing.

Aside from taking home the awards, all the Global Rounds’ high-achieving teams automatically pre-qualify for the Tournament of Champions at Yale University. Participants will get to interact and learn directly from Yale students and faculty. They will also attend a special panel on college life, listen to keynote speeches by Yale University professors, and the Yale Ball.

The Tournament of Champions will take place at Yale University, November 9-14. The team that excelled in The World Scholar’s Cup Global Round qualified six debate entries for the penultimate tournament.
