Jewelry can make or break an outfit. Wearing too little can make you look underdressed and plain, but piling it on and going over the top can draw unwanted attention.

To keep it classy and elegant, here are the rules to follow when it comes to wearing your bling.

1. Layer with caution.

The fun of jewelry starts with mixing and matching, but it can snowball from there. It’s best to remember to keep a stylish balance. These include pairing chunky bracelets with thin and delicate ones and mixing short and long necklaces together. As Coco Chanel once said, “Before you leave the house, look in the mirror and take one thing off.”

2. Pick one statement piece.

…And keep the rest subdued. If you wear a statement necklace, wear simple earrings or no earrings at all. This holds the same for statement earrings and statement bracelets. Rings, however, are another field altogether. A bold ring can match the right statement earring, but make sure they don’t clash.

3. Know how to wear jewelry sets.

Matching your earrings to your ring is fine. Adding a matching necklace and bracelet, however, is overkill. Choose pieces that coordinate and complement each other to create a stylish, cohesive look.

4. Mixing metals is perfectly acceptable.

Once upon a time, it was considered tacky and even garish to mix metals. Though it may not be for everyone, mixing metals is a stylish and contemporary way to elevate your look. If you do decide to wear gold and white gold together, remember to go all the way as opposed to wearing one silver piece with a bunch of gold jewelry.

5. Mixing fine and costume jewelry is encouraged.

Several contemporary costume jewelry designers make gorgeous pieces that mix well with more extravagant pieces. The key to pulling it off is by creating a stylish high-low balance. Jackie Kennedy Onassis herself used to mix costume pieces with fine jewelry. She kept it elegant by choosing sophisticated designs that didn’t clash with the rest of her jewelry.

6. Accessorize for the occasion.

For everyday wear, use more subtle and versatile pieces such as pearls or simple metals. Diamonds were once considered a nighttime piece, but these days, it depends on the piece and size. Always ask yourself where you’re going, what you’re doing, and what the dress code is before busting out your more opulent pieces.

7. Mind your manicure.

A bold ring can add a much-needed boost to an outfit, but it also draws attention to your hands… and nails for that matter. Create a balanced look by making sure your nails are clean and polished. If you decide to add color, opt for simple, muted tones or something that complements that colors of your ring.
