This year’s Luminor 1950 Sealand is the tenth model by Panerai that honors the Chinese zodiac. It comes with either a leather or black rubber strap.

It follows that the timepiece features the image of a dog, engraved by master craftsmen using the ancient Italian technique of sparsello. The process begins with artisans crafting grooves in the steel, which are then completely inlaid with gold thread in multiple parallel layers to form the artwork. Because even the slightest of errors can set back the entire process, the technique is arduous and highly delicate, performed only by the most skilled of artisans.

The timepiece’s design also features auspicious Chinese iconography, including plum blossoms, which have served as symbols of hope, perseverance, purity, and beauty in Chinese art for centuries. Whether or not you’re a believer of Chinese tradition, the intricacy with which this piece is crafted—as well as the fact that only 88 pieces are being made available—makes certain of its value and collectability.
