It was the Instagram engagement announcement heard around the jewelry world. Two hands clasped with an enormous emerald cut diamond shining on one. The hands, to be clear, were those of Jennifer Lopez and Alex Rodriguez and the message was simple: “She said yes.”

The ring? Not so simple. It’s estimated at between 10 and 15 carats and worth in the range of $1 to $5 million.

Jewelry people fixated mostly on the emerald cut stone. This cut, first used centuries ago for its namesake stone, became popular in diamond cutting during the Art Deco era due to its sharp and geometric lines. The cut enhances a stones clarity and gives a “hall of mirrors” effect but also demands a lot of a diamond. An emerald cut also can expose inclusions quite quickly so stone quality needs to be close to perfect. Jennifer Lopez’s might just be that.

Jennifer Lopez’s engagement rings are closely watched because they have been known to impact the diamond market in mysterious and profound ways. Remember her Harry Winston pink diamond from Ben Affleck? A jewelry world insider believes that Harry Winston ring had profound influence.

Jennifer Lopez wears her engagement ring from Ben Affleck during a press conference for their movie Gigli in 2003.

“Jennifer’s ring from Ben became the most talked about engagement ring in modern social history. It was a 6.10 carat fancy intense pink diamond (radiant cut) with white diamonds side accents—a very rare and very precious colored diamond that most people were unaware of it the time. Ben specifically chose it due to her love of the color pink. In fact it was the catalyst that started the trend toward colored diamonds and singularly sent the value of pink diamonds into the stratosphere. Almost two decades later, they still continue to escalate in value. The engagement was kept secret for about six weeks due to the excessive media attention that intruded into their lives.”

“This 6 carat pink was more valuable than a flawless perfect color 20 carat diamond at the time—and still would be,” the jeweler continues. “The myth surrounding that ring is so engrained in popular culture that is is talked about almost 20 years later.”

Will this ring do for emerald cuts what that did for colored diamonds? The cut has become increasingly popular recently—see Amal Clooney, Beyoncé, Angelina Jolie, Kate Hudson, Kim Kardashian—but it also has a place in engagement ring history. Both Grace Kelly and Elizabeth Taylor has emerald cut engagement rings.

And is there a bride out there without either of them on her Pinterest board?
