Summer was the season of relaxed, poolside dressing—when the straw hats brimmed ever larger, the logo slides heralded ever grander, and basket bags abounded in every size, color, and shape.

The arrival of September, however, signals the imminent transition to the “ber months," and with it, the re-emergence of up-the-ante glamour looks just in time for pre-fall. When you need an outfit inspiration for the upcoming work-to-cocktail party social engagements of the holiday months, look no further than to the queen of polish, the Duchess of Sussex herself.

When Meghan Markle turned up at the Hamilton gala in her sleek Judith & Charles number, it was a testament to the enduring appeal of the tuxedo dress. There was an underlying cheekiness to the sexy, legs-for-days look she carried with breezy confidence. A few weeks later, the tuxedo dress and its variations were seen on Instagram feeds and on the svelte figures of our favorite style icons.

Below are some of our favorite looks so far:

The look that started it all: Megan Markle at the Hamilton Gala.

Or was it?

Back in April, Blake Lively who has proven to have an obsession with suiting, rocked a very forward version of the tuxedo dress in navy-blue satin at CinemaCon.

Sara Sampaio was extra-glam in a white Azzaro coat dress matched with a glittering, mesh belt at Russell James' book launch.

Kendall Jenner looked on point as usual in Alexandre Vauthier.

Olivia Palermo looked effortlessly chic at NYFW.

Rosie Huntington-Whiteley wore a longer, evening version of the tuxedo dress at Ralph Lauren’s 50th Anniversary Gala & Runway.

Natalie Portman’s cape dress at the Venice Film Festival.
