Heritage brands have been getting their fair share of the fashion limelight in recent seasons. Fashionistas seem to be looking at storied ol’ companies from Goyard to Brooks Brothers to inject gravitas to their wardrobe. In the Philippines, the venerable S.C. Vizcarra was established in 1925 as a Taller de Bordados de Mano (hand-embroidery studio) by Segundina Cornejo Vizcarra.

Her stores, which sold all manner of Filipiniana merchandise, mushroomed all over the metro and even had a branch in Hawaii. Daughter Vicky Vizcarra Amalingan-Sales took over the business, which by then was exporting hand-woven bags and home accessories. Vicky’s daughter Rita Nazareno, who was cajoled into the family business in 2010, injects a modern sensibility into their woven wares.

Vizcarra.
