Some of us keep a wedding gown or even a prom dress in the back of our closet on the off chance we might have the chance to wear it again. Actress Rita Moreno just hit the red carpet at the Academy Awards in the very same dress she wore to the 1962 Oscars.

“This is the gown I wore in 1962 when I won my Oscar. This was made in the Philippines,” Moreno told People. “I don’t believe it—I’m holding it [in], good lord. I leave you with that.”

She modified the 56-year-old dress by making it a strapless gown and pairing it with long black gloves. The dress was designed by late Filipino fashion designer Pitoy Moreno.

The dress is doubly important to the actress because she wore it the year she won Best Supporting Actress for her role in West Side Story. The Puerto Rico-born Moreno was 31 at the time; she is 86 now. She has been starring in the reboot of One Day at a Time.

During rehearsals for the Oscars telecast last night, Moreno's daughter revealed to Vanity Fair that her mother planned to wear the dress. The icon confirmed the news herself earlier today.

West Side Story swept the 1962 Oscars, winning 10 statues including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Cinematography, Best Costumes, and Best Supporting Actor and Actress statues for George Chakiris and Moreno, respectively. It was recently announced that Stephen Spielberg is at work on a remake.
