Kiss those Gucci minks goodbye, fur-ever.

Gucci CEO Marco Bizarri announced earlier today at the London College of Fashion that they would be discontinuing fur in their future collections. Gucci will join the Fur Free Alliance and rank alongside other fashion moguls like Zara, Armani, and Timberland, who have also taken the pledge against fur. The Alliance prohibits the use of coyote, mink, rabbit, fox, karakul, raccoon dog, and any other species bred specifically for their fur.

Previously, Stella McCartney, Giorgio Armani, Hugo Boss, and Net-A-Porter, also discontinued fur.

Gucci's move was made possible by cooperating with the Humane Society of the U.S. and an Italian-based animal welfare group known as LAV.

Bizarri emphasized moral accountability in his statement, saying: "Being socially responsible is one of Gucci’s core values, and we will continue to strive to do better for the environment and animals. With the help of HSUS and LAV, Gucci is excited to take this next step and hopes it will help inspire innovation and raise awareness, changing the luxury fashion industry for the better."

Gucci's reputation in the fashion industry suggests it won't be long before other brands follow suit. This is a fashion statement unprecedented for the luxury fashion label: and perhaps creates an opportunity for more creative pieces, and inspired brands, in the future.
