Skip the high heels, and break out the flats.

We recently released a story on what you should not wear while traveling on a plane, we decided to compile a list of what you should wear. Traveling by plane is never the most comfortable situation no matter what class you're flying, since you have to sit strapped in within a confined space for hours. Airports are no different, packed with inescapable crowds and a hurried atmosphere. Many would agree that comfort is key in these situations, so here are our suggestions on what you should wear when traveling:

1. Light, breathable fabric

Think silk-blend tops or chambray and leave the velvet and burlap at home. You’re already confined during the flight, so you’ll want to be able to move more easily and anything flowy and light will work to your advantage.

2. Turtlenecks

If you’re prone to shivering or if you’re headed to a colder environment, opt for a turtleneck sweater so you need not lug around a scarf that will just be one more thing to think about.

3. No-fuss footwear

Expect to do more walking than what you’re usually accustomed to, so while your airport ensemble might be elevated by a particular pair of heels, put comfort first. You may even find that slip-ons or loafers à la Gucci S/S17 have the same effect on your overall style as your first choice of heeled shoes.

4. Longline cardigans

The trick when dressing for destinations with unpredictable climate is to layer, so you may easily shed or add to what you already have on. The long cardigan as outerwear is a suitable option because of the temperate warmth it provides and its ability to act as a blanket that you take with you wherever you go.

5. Compression leggings

In response to skinny jeans cutting off blood circulation in your legs, compression legwear does the complete opposite. It also helps prevent swelling.

6. Loose jeans

You might think wearing jeans when traveling would be ideal but going for a pair too tight or too heavy might cause you discomfort after a few hours, especially on long-haul flights. Travel in a pair with fabric that stretches but also flaunts your natural assets.

7. Trousers

If denim seems too casual, a good pair of trousers always works in its place.

8. Mid-length skirts

When going the more feminine route, you’ll want to cover up as much as possible, what with the all the bacteria lurking in every corner of the airport. Mid-length skirts give you exactly the right amount of coverage but also do not restrict you when you’re dashing to your boarding gate.

9. Button-downs

Or any basic shirt, really, although button-downs manage to keep your whole attire looking smart.

10. Clothes with pockets

Going through the entire airport process requires you to be ready at all times, which is why pockets always come in handy when keeping and taking out passports and other small travel necessities.

11. Sling bags

Sling bags work well at airports so you can keep your belongings close to you while having two hands free. Zippers are a must. We all know the dangers of pickpockets where tourists are abundant.
