Just one look at Tom Ford’s skin will tell you that he is a man who knows his way around a serum. Yet the admitted skincare aficionado has never found products that entirely meet his discriminating standards—so he decided to create his own.

Enter Tom Ford Research, the designer’s new luxury skincare range, which launched today on tomford.com. Not only do the first two offerings out of the gate—a Serum Concentrate and a Cream Concentrate—propose high-performance minimalism in this age of multi-step regimens, they’re also positioned as being wholly universal and unisex. “My vision is to create transformative skincare regardless of skin type or gender,” Ford states. “This is the reason I established Tom Ford Research. Working closely with a team of scientists, we develop what is truly remarkable and that which delivers undeniable visible results.”

The buzz-worthy products themselves are actually based on buzz. In breakthrough findings that have been presented to the American Academy of Dermatology, Ford’s researchers found that caffeine promotes the movement of sodium ions, which conduct energy like mini batteries and significantly increase hydration levels in the surface of the skin.

To most efficiently harness caffeine’s skin-stimulating properties, the Serum and Cream both contain a trifecta of powerhouse ingredients: extremely rare and polyphenol-rich white porcelain cacao, pure caffeine, and Gyokuro, a special variety of amino-acid-packed green tea.

The Serum, which took 75 trials before the exacting Mr. Ford gave it the green light, is fortified with gentle lactic and glycolic acids to brighten and smooth skin, as well as peptides,  to diminish fine lines. The Cream, which similarly passed a battery of tests—one of which proved that it could hydrate skin for up to 24 hours—is loaded with drenching hyaluronic acid, along with algae extract to calm uppity redness and even out skin tone.

At $350 (for the Serum Concentrate) and $450 (for the Cream Concentrate), Tom Ford Research is a bit more spendy than your morning latte, but you’d be hard-pressed to find a more promising wake-up call.
