If You Love the Smell of Leather, This Luxury Scent Is for You

Galop d'Hermès was inspired by Doblis leather.

Here’s an interesting fact about Galop d’Hermès, the new fragrance from the French luxury label that makes your favorite bags: It’s inspired by leather as soft as your skin, more specifically doblis, which in-house perfumer Christine Nagel discovered in the company’s very secret leather library. When Nagel came across the soft suede leather, she understood, “in an instant,” the elegant power of femininity. She also knew that this kind of wildness required the right complement, and so she turned to a classic: the rose.

This was perfect for the fragrance’s composition, since two opposing forces—the dusky doblis versus the lush bloom—ensure that neither overwhelms the other. Instead, the juxtaposition creates a rhythm. “Leather carries the rose and the rose animates the leather in a dance where they match,” Nagel notes. That just means the skin and petal (politely) take turns moving toward the center and then away from the light, making Galop compelling and you most memorable.
