South Korea is a country that puts a premium on one’s physical attributes. Known as the Plastic Surgery Capital of the World, its locals believe that while “beauty is not something that everyone is born with, it can be made afterward.”

In Seoul alone, 20 percent of women aged 19 to 49 have undergone plastic surgery, based on the data gathered by the International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery. Out of a thousand patients who went under the knife, 67.8 percent have done double-eyelid surgery, which is the most popular procedure being done by Koreans.

“It has been 10 to 15 years since plastic surgery became popular in Korea. I think the media, among other reasons, is why people care so much about their beauty,” Dr. Soon Hong Kwon tells Harper’s BAZAAR, also noting what makes their country the go-to for plastic surgery even for foreigners. “The proportion of plastic surgeons among Korean doctors is higher than any other country. It brings out a high competition among the plastic surgeons… With the high competition among surgeons and high demand, it creates the best quality of plastic surgery in the world.”
