Forever Young: The Beauty Rituals of Mikaela Lagdameo-Martinez

It is because of women like Mikaela Lagdameo-Martinez that people say there is beauty in simplicity. She credits her looks, which haven’t changed much since we first saw her on TV 18 years ago, to such a fuss-free beauty outlook.

Everyone has come to know you for your modeling career. What else are you busy with?
Well, I work nine-to-five as a money broker for a financing company, I co-own and manage Elan Models International, and more recently, I got into a partnership with a bar and restaurant, Bugsy’s Alabang. Above everything else, I’m a wife and mother of two.

What other dreams are you in the process of fulfilling?
I’ve decided that every year I’d visit at least one country I’ve never been to and eventually, fulfill my dream of traveling the world. I also would like to see my family grow, and get pregnant one more time! And maybe build a few more businesses that we’ve been working on and watch them succeed.

“In the morning, after a bath and a splash of cold water on my face, I apply goat’s milk lotion to moisturize my face and neck, I scrub my lips, and put on lotion. That’s it. At night I just cleanse with a spa gel.”

What impression do you hope to leave through your personal look?
That I’m just being myself and comfortable in my own skin. I don’t have to try and be the most fashionable or beautiful person around. It’s not me. I’m simple, laid-back, and I stand by “less is more.”

What would you say is your best feature and how do you emphasize it?
Probably my skin. I rarely get any pimples, and my skin hardly ever gets dry or oily—so I guess that’s also why I don’t usually put any foundation on.

“Since I love going to the beach, I make sure to protect my skin before getting a tan. If not I apply a bronzing product instead.”

Most memorable beauty faux pas?
Eyelash extensions that used to last for two months. Not so long ago I thought they looked good; and now they just look weird and so unnatural.

“I always have my lip balm, cream blush, lipstick in nude or pink and a red option for quick evening changes, my favorite eyeliner, and perfume. I prefer nude and bronze shades. I don’t like having too much makeup on. I like the natural and sun-kissed look.”

Bobbi Brown Brick Blush, Laura Mercier lipstick in pink, Jo Malone perfume, all available at Rustan’s Makati, 813.3739; Happy Skin Eye Am Here to Stay eyeliner, Beauty Bar, Greenbelt 5, 757.5028

Beauty icons?
Jennifer Lawrence has one of the most beautiful faces I’ve ever seen. It’s that type of face that just gets prettier as you keep staring. Natalie Portman bloomed even more afrer giving birth! And Jennifer Lopez—her skin color, glow, and style that’s always so classy yet laid-back.

Life philosophy?
Everything happens for a reason.
