Chanel No. 5 Gets A Complete Makeover, And We Love It
Chanel No. 5 was the first perfume launched by Coco Chanel herself in 1921, and so the brand’s long-time commitment to protect and preserve the classic fragrance all these years is very understandable. Since its creation, Chanel had only dared to create minimal enhancements such as an eau de toilette, an eau de parfum, and an eau premiere. This year, however, is groundbreaking as the perfume finally gets a true makeover with Chanel N°5 L’Eau. The brand is proud to say that “it is the No. 5 of today,” and that “it is not a cologne nor a diluted version of the original fragrance.” We say it is a younger, fresher, lighter take on the classic, in case the youthful and energetic Lily-Rose Depp as the perfume’s image model isn’t enough to send that message across. This is definitely not your grandmother's Chanel No. 5.
Quite aptly, N°5 L’Eau was created by Chanel perfumer Olivier Polge, whose father, Jacques Polge, was the nose behind the previous iterations of the Chanel No. 5 and also the former perfumer of the brand. What Olivier came up with is a complete reinvention with N°5 L’Eau that retains the DNA of its predecessor and remains classy without being old-fashioned.
Basically, he removed the overwhelming aspects of the perfume and replaced them with lighter, brighter takes that equally last. According to Chanel, he “gave preference to aldehydes with the scent of orange rind and abandoned the more metallic ones; increased the vibrancy of the zests and removed the powder from the base; rendered the woods more dynamic and added green to the ylang-ylang; and made the jasmine as light as air and decreased the vanilla.” The result is perhaps the freshest and most natural Chanel No. 5 ever made—with notes of lemon, mandarin, and orange opening the fragrance before its heart notes of rose, jasmine, and ylang ylang pick up and cottony musk, vetiver, and cedar are revealed.
Pegged as Chanel’s “fragrance of the here, now, and always,” N°5 L’Eau can definitely become the brand’s new signature scent. We say it’s about time.
