It has been said that your brain uses 20 percent of your energy, and these days, between life stress, work, and general fatigue, it can sometimes feel like brain fog takes over. Now, there exist a number of non-pharmaceutical herbs and substances, called nootropics, that say they can be utilized to boost your brain and help you feel sharper and clear-minded—and thus more productive.

But what exactly are nootropics? We asked Dr. Shari Auth, co-founder of wellness clinic WTHN, who explained that nootropics are herbs, supplements, or synthetic substances that can enhance brain function—including things like memory and learning.

"Nootropics can boost brain functioning in otherwise healthy individuals, but they are also neuro-protective, thus they have some preventative benefits as well," says Auth. She adds that even though some people may notice an immediate effect when taking a nootropic, herb blends often work best cumulatively. "Think of it like food for your brain," says Auth," but herbs only work if you take them, so establishing a routine and consistency is key."
