The stress of everyday life can get overwhelming. And while there are many ways to wind down and to destress, might we suggest spending some time giving back to the community? Volunteerism has been increasing in relevance due to accessibility and its power to greatly influence society as a whole. There are many platforms and ways to help out, whether it’s discreetly or in a more active manner (such as dedicating a full day doing volunteer work). While volunteerism does have its personal benefits such as counteracting the effects of anxiety and keeping you physically healthy, we reckon one should volunteer simply for the greater good. Whether you have been thinking of reaching out to an organization or looking to jumpstart your volunteer work, here are some simple suggestions we have for you.

Choose an advocacy you love.

It’s easy to get yourself on your feet if it involves something you feel passionately about. Whether you’re a sustainable fashion advocate, an environmentalist, an animal lover, or a human rights activist, you’re sure to find a group that fits you best.

Sponsor a scholarship.

A lot of non-profit organizations have opportunities for you to provide financial support by sponsoring a student's scholarship. Groups such as Mano Amiga and Project Malasakit invite you to sponsor a child’s education.

Dedicate a day to an outreach activity.

From tree-planting, house-building, to beach cleanups, there’s a myriad of activities from a pool of local organizations for you to choose from, depending on your interests or your advocacies. It’s just a matter of signing up!

Make a donation.

Getting involved financially can be of great help to the organization, especially when it’s an emerging one. There are one-time and periodic options such as the ones offered by UNICEF.

Visit an orphanage.

If you like spending time with children, then visiting an orphanage is a great way to help out because you’re time and presence would be invaluable to them. You can call orphanages such as White Cross and CRIBS Foundation to schedule a visit.

Visit a nursing home.

Oftentimes, a nursing home isn’t top-of-mind when it comes to volunteerism; however, these establishments would definitely appreciate any kind of support they can get. You can sponsor a meal and spend time with the elderly who would be more than happy to welcome you.

The biggest volunteer day in the metro

On September 28, 2019, you can get your hands full with a lot of altruistic work at the annual Servathon (a portmanteau of service marathon), which is the flagship project of Hands on Manila. The event will gather over 1,000 company volunteers for a day of activities that will benefit the two partner organizations for this year, World Wildlife Fund (WWF), the leading organization in wildlife conservation and endangered species, and the Asian Social Institute (ASI), an institution that develops innovative and sustainable environmental projects.

This year’s theme is “Hands on, Hearts out for the Environment,” and volunteers will get to make Mabuhay Balls, derived from the Japanese composting process of bokashi. These Mabuhay Balls will improve the quality of polluted water. Next, participants will also get to create soil booster mixes to enrich soil quality, as well as paint the canvas bags of information packs which will be sent to local schools to educate them about the environment.

Hands on Manila is the leading non-profit organization working to promote volunteerism in the Philippines. It is the first international affiliate of Hands on Network U.S.A. (now known as Points of Light Foundation), the largest organization in the world dedicated to volunteer service. It is also accredited by the Philippine Council for NGO Certification.

Servathon 2019 will take place in the Philippine International Convention Center (PICC) Forum Tent on September 28, 2019.

For more information, visit handsonmanila.org or contact Hands on Manila through 843.7044.
