Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer to Receive $23 Million Payout

Does her golden parachute stack up against media titans such as Roger Ailes, Michael Eisner, and Amy Pascal?
Comments

While being pushed out of power is certainly painful, a golden parachute of tens of millions of dollars more than helps cushion the fall. Here are some of the biggest payouts in recent media history.

Marissa Mayer, CEO of Yahoo

Date of departure: None, as of yet.

Compensation package: $23 Million

Why she was out: While Mayer hasn't officially been asked to step down as CEO of Yahoo!, the company's sale to Verizon suggests her time there is limited.

How her golden parachute went over: A statement from Verizon suggests she's staying, at least for the time being. "Marissa will be very key to successful integration," Verizon executive Marni Walden told Bloomberg Television in July of 2016, though at that time her payout was rumored to be substantially higher. "It's premature to talk about who will be in what roles."

In order to receive the severance, Mayer must be "terminated without cause" or she must leave and terminate her agreement "for good reason" within one year of the sale.

Philippe Dauman

Date of Departure: August 2016

Compensation Package: $72.5 million

Why he was out: When Dauman replaced Sumner Redstone because of the older man's supposed senility, the Redstones were out for blood. As stock prices dropped, the family became more and more furious with Dauman's leadership, until Sumner finally fired Dauman from the board.

How his golden parachute went over: "Dauman is the third highest paid CEO in the United States and among the worst as measured by pay for performance. Including his pre-negotiated 'golden parachute,' he stands to receive almost a half billion dollars for a tenure that has seen the marked decline of one of the nation's greatest media companies"—National Amusements Inc.'s statement
