SM Prime Chairman Hans Sy kept his 62nd birthday festivities low key with an intimate get together with friends and family.

“In the past years, I would reward myself with something special on my birthday. It could be an expensive watch or a painting. Then it hit me. Now, I feel so much better,” he told the media during the inauguration of the CHILD Haus’ (Center for Health Improvement & Life Development) permanent home.

Sy says it was challenging to acquire the strategically placed property, but owner Mercedes Barrios-Rivera gave in upon learning that her home was walking distance away from the Philippine General Hospital and would be of great benefit to the numerous children that are treated there.

Sy decided to get involved after seeing iconic hairdresser Ricky Reyes, founder of CHILD Haus, served with an eviction warrant.

Today, CHILD Haus is 15 years strong. Located in Paco, Manila, CHILD Haus is a seven-story hospice that caters to children afflicted with cancer. The hospice provides free shelter for up to 100 patients (and their guardians) while they seek treatment at government hospitals located around the city.

CHILD Haus also gives patients access to holistic healing services and amenities that include a playground, library, dispensary, isolation rooms (for high-risk patients).
