Wonder Kid: Filipino Student Wins Prizes Worth P20 Million in Global Science Competition

18-year-old Hillary Andales of Palo, Leyte was honored alongside top achievers in physics, life sciences, and mathematics.

Hillary Andales, an 18-year-old resident of Palo, Leyte was awarded this year’s Breakthrough Junior Challenge prize. A student in Philippine Science High School’s Eastern Visayas campus, Andales competed against more than 10,000 students from 178 countries all over the world.

GMA News reports Andales was honored alongside top achievers in the fields of physics, life sciences, and mathematics during the Breakthrough Prize Ceremony at NASA Ames Research Center in Silicon Valley last Sunday. Her video entry on the ‘Relativity & the Equivalence of Reference Frames’ was judged by top researchers, editors, scientists, and executives through its engagement, creativity, difficulty, and illumination.

As the winner, Andales received a $250,000 post-secondary scholarship as well as a $50,000 prize for her science teacher and a $100,000 Breakthrough Science Lab for her school designed in partnership with Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory.

Breakthrough is a non-profit organization that honors important advancements in the categories of fundamental physics, life sciences, and mathematics. The organization was founded by Sergey Brin and Anne Wojcicki, Yuri and Julia Milner, and Mark Zuckerberg, and Priscilla Chan.

Through the Breakthrough Junior Challenge, the organization supports and honors young students while inspiring creative thinking about science. Andales previously won the Breakthrough Junior Challenge Popular Vote in 2016, wherein she explained path integrals in quantum physics.

Aside from winning the challenge, Andales also counts being a consistent champion on Metrobank-MTAP-DepEd Math Challenge’s Division Finals among her achievements as well as leading the Regional Council of the Philippine Society of Youth Science Clubs, Philippine Science High School’s paper The Science Net, and a Japan-Asia Youth Exchange Program in Science delegate.
