Despite the odd online rivalry going on between the fans of Venom and A Star Is Born, there is an unassuming but very crucial link between the two movies—cinematographer Matthew Libatique, who is responsible for capturing the action in both of these blockbusters.

His name might not have an immediate recall, but Libatique is no amateur. A regular collaborator of Darren Aronofsky, he has served as Director of Photography for films like Requiem for a DreamThe FountainNoah, and Black Swan to name only a few. He’s also worked on Iron Man 1 and 2, Phone BoothCowboys & AliensTigerland, and of course, Venom.

His latest project is with Bradley Cooper on the Hollywood actor’s directorial debut, A Star Is Born, starring Lady Gaga. Matthew’s task was to bring to the screen the raw experience the two leads go through handling fame, heartbreaks, and the triumphs in life. “He’s an artist,” Cooper says about Libatique. “I got to meet him through Darren Aronofsky, who he has done many films with, and we hit it off right away. I told him we wouldn’t have a lot of days and we’d be moving fast, here’s the color palette I see, here’s a little about the opening composition, and he just got it.”

Matthew employed several techniques such as handheld, steadicam, long tracking shots to properly capture the essence of Cooper and Gaga’s character. The director was keenly aware of his contribution, “Thank God for Matty and his crew, they were incredible.”

Libatique earned his first Oscar, BAFTA, and American Society of Cinematographers nomination for Black Swan, where he won honors from The New York and Los Angeles Film Critics’ Awards as well as the Independent Spirit Award.

A Star Is Born hits local theatres on October 10.
