Why Meghan Markle's Friends Likely Won't Be Her Bridesmaids
Ever since Prince Harry and Meghan Markle revealed their engagement last week, there's been lots of speculation as to who will be in the wedding party. Prince Harry reportedly asked Prince William to be his best man (although, technically, there is no such position at a royal wedding, only the role of "supporter"). And experts say there's a high likelihood Prince George and Princess Charlotte will as a page boy and a bridesmaid. But, who will assist the bride on her big day?
Some are hopeful her celeb pals—like Serena Williams, Priyanka Chopra, and Suits co-star Sarah Rafferty—will play a role. While others wonder if Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge, will be in the bridal party.
However, according to British and European royalty expert Marlene Koenig, we'll likely not see any adult attendants.
"Most royal brides do not have adult bridesmaids," Koenig tells Town & Country. "It would be unusual for a royal bride to have a woman in her late 30s as a maid or matron of
Koenig says a rare exception was the Queen herself, whose female attendants were largely all in the same age-group, including her sister, Princess Margaret, and cousins, at her 1947 wedding to Prince Philip.
"The youngest bridesmaid was her cousin, Princess Alexandra, who was approaching her 10th birthday, plus two small page boys, Prince William of Gloucester and Prince Michael of Kent," she explains. "If you look at the royal weddings since Elizabeth's, you will find that most of the bridesmaids are early teens or children."
For example, at Princess Alexandra's wedding to in 1963, Princess Anne, the only daughter of the Queen, was the eldest bridesmaid at age 13.
