Why Meghan Markle Can't Sign Autographs

Outlets are reporting that Markle broke royal protocol in Wales. Here's why they're wrong.

Marrying into the royal family comes with a long list of rules that Meghan Markle is quickly learning for herself, even before she walks down the aisle.

While on an official visit to Cardiff, Wales yesterday, Prince Harry's fiancée reportedly wrote something in the autograph book of a young girl named Caitlin Clark, but Markle didn't sign her name; giving autographs is strictly against protocol.

Rather, she wrote a sweet note, "Hi Kaitlin" with a heart and a smiley face. "I don’t really care [about the misspelling]," Clark said. "My heart is still racing. I’ve never got a royal autograph before. This is going to make everyone jealous."

As The Express points out, the prohibition against royal autographs is in place because there's a risk of royal signatures being copied or forged. So, you won't see Prince Harry signing autographs for well-wishers either, although that hasn't stopped him in the past.

In 2010, Prince Harry signed his name along with "get well soon" on the cast of an injured girl.

That same year, during a visit to meet flood victims in Cornwall, England, Prince Charles scribbled "Charles 2010" on a piece of paper for a resident who requested an autograph, The Telegraph noted at the time. He reportedly apologized for the "shaky writing" because he "never writes standing up," but the recipient was said to be delighted nonetheless.

These are said to be rare occurrences, but there are some occasions when the royals are invited to sign their names. They may sign visitors books' or official documents, as the Duchess of Cambridge did at the Stutthof concentration camp during an official visit to Poland and Germany.
