Queen Elizabeth's Garden Party "Worry" Nearly Became Reality

Each year, Queen Elizabeth hosts three garden parties on the Buckingham Palace grounds. With the U.K.'s notoriously fickle weather, it's odds-on that one or more will have less than ideal conditions.

And the show does go on, even if it's drizzling. On May 29, for a moment, the party's rainy fate seemed sealed. Guests shielded themselves as they waited to enter the event—and the Queen, once she arrived, was even packing her own umbrella. Thankfully, it remained sheathed.

And thus, the Queen's great garden party "worry" was avoided. During this summer's previous garden party, the British monarch revealed her deep concern about the weather. "Well, you do rather hope the sun shines as when you invite 8,000 people to have tea on your lawn," she said, per People. "It can be a bit of a worry."

A bit of a worry! The Queen can now breathe a sigh of relief, even if she was (a bit) concerned earlier in the day.

Still, when it came to her own personal protection from the downpour, the Queen was prepared. Somewhere in Buckingham Palace, she maintains a sizable stockpile of custom umbrellas, many of which were made to go with a specific look. "We match the colors to the Queen’s outfit, and that’s the key with this umbrella," Nigel Fulton, the CEO of the company that manufactures the pieces, previously explained to Town & Country. Today's had pink accents, to suit her blush coat and hat.

With only one garden party left this summer—this time at Holyrood House, in Scotland—the Queen may just make it through the season without it having rained on her parade.
