No, the Queen Didn't Shade Meghan Markle in Today's Announcement of Her Consent

Wedding plans for Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's nuptials have been in the works for months, but the Queen only just gave her official blessing of their marriage today.

This morning, a letter from the Court of Buckingham Palace was released granting the monarch's approval for the May 19 celebration.

"My Lords, I declare My Consent to a Contract of Matrimony between My Most Dearly Beloved Grandson Prince Henry Charles Albert David of Wales and Rachel Meghan Markle, which Consent I am causing to be signified under the Great Seal and to be entered in the Books of the Privy Council."

In layman's terms, Harry's granny approves.

The announcement below was also shared, according to reporter Richard Palmer:

Following the Royal Marriages Act 1772, every royal family member needed the monarch's permission to marry, but after a change to the rule in 2013, only the first six in line to the throne need the Queen's consent.

Prince Harry is currently fifth in the order of succession. He will become sixth after the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge's third child is born.

While the news is cause for celebration, some are suggesting the Queen slighted Meghan Markle in the announcement. Initially, we reported that when Elizabeth II gave her formal consent back in 2011, she described the bride-to-be "Our Trusty and Well-beloved Catherine Elizabeth Middleton.''

That lovely descriptor of the Duchess of Cambridge appears in the formal consent released with an official seal just prior to the wedding, but it did not appear in the Queen's announcement of consent from the Privy Council, which is what was shared today for Meghan Markle and Prince Harry.

We apologize for this error.
