Princess Diana's Dresses Fetch Roughly $330,000 at Auction

Three of the late royal's outfits went for almost triple the auction estimate.

On June 17, Kerry Taylor Auctions put three of Princess Diana's iconic ensembles up for sale—and ended up raking in roughly $330,000, nearly three times what they were estimated to go for.

"Diana's daywear is much rarer than her evening wear, which she auctioned a huge tranche off in the late 1990s," Kerry Taylor, of Kerry Taylor Auctions, explained to the Daily Mail. "Daywear dresses she wore for more formal functions she either gave to friends or charity shops, so they have mostly disappeared. These were very well documented outfits and one of a kind as they were made specifically for her."

Interestingly, all of the clothes were sold by the same collector. The first look, a red wool skirted suit, was designed by Jasper Conran, who confirmed he made the outfit custom for the princess. Diana wore it multiple times, perhaps most famously to christen the "Royal Princess" cruise liner in November of 1984. It went for about £62,500 ($78,952) on the auction block.

A second look, also believed to be custom (this time by Catherine Walker, one of Princess Diana's favorite designers), was worn by Princess Diana during the President of Turkey's state visit to the U.K. in 1988. It fetched nearly £93,000 ($117,481).

The last outfit went for a whopping £106,000 ($133,903), and was designed by Elizabeth Emanuel, who co-designed Princess Diana's wedding dress with her husband David Emanuel. Diana wore the striped dress, along with its matching Bianchini silk under-dress, while on a royal tour of Bahrain in 1986.
