After receiving letters from well-wishers on their birthdays, anniversaries, and more, the royal family often sends thank-you notes—and as the four-year-old Princess Charlotte is too young to write her own, Kate Middleton and Prince William step in to fill the gap.

Charlotte turned four on May 2, and near the end of June, blog Gert's Royal Replies received a sweet note from Will and Kate. On one side, the card features an official birthday portrait of Charlotte (taken by amateur photographer Kate Middleton), and on the other, a thoughtful message.

"The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge appreciated your kind thought in writing to Princess Charlotte as you did on the occasion of her fourth birthday," the card reads. " This was greatly appreciated by Their Royal Highnesses who send you their best wishes."

But as Gert's Royal Replies had gone the extra mile—not only wishing Charlotte a happy birthday, but also congratulating Kate Middleton on her appointment as a Dame Grand Cross of the Royal Victorian Order—the royal office included an additional letter.

"Their Royal Highnesses are grateful to you for taking the trouble to write as you did and were touched by your kind words of support regarding Her Royal Highness's recent appointment as Dame Grand Cross of the Royal Victorian Order (GCVO)," the letter reads. "It really was most thoughtful of you... The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge have asked me to send you their warmest thanks and best wishes." It's signed by Claudia Spens, who the blog identifies as the head of correspondence at Clarence House.
