We know very little about Nikolai, Prince of Denmark, the eldest son of Prince Joachim. The handsome young Nikolai has managed to fly under the radar the past few years, dodging media headlines and concealing his personal life from the general public (we do know that he likes deep house music... but that’s about it).

Nikolai became the subject of public scrutiny recently, however, as his spectacular 18th birthday party threw him into the media spotlight. And it looks like he’s here to stay.

Newly dubbed Europe’s most eligible royal bachelor after coming of age, Prince Nikolai took center stage when he celebrated his birthday on a yacht. On his guest list? Only the entire Danish royal family itself, including Her Majesty, the Queen of Denmark.

The royal ship, Dannebrog, was host to a private family dinner in honor of the prince, especially organized by Queen Margrethe II.  Apart from the amazing photo opportunities presented during the event, the Danish Royal Court also released two new portraits of Prince Nikolai in celebration of his major milestone.

For many, one's 18th birthday is a highly significant one, with one finally reaching adulthood. Many had expected the Prince to announce his chosen career path, being seventh in line to the throne and unlikely to become the next ruler. However, the Prince has decided to further his education instead, and will continue to be financially dependent on his parents until he graduates.

Prince Nikolai did not receive money or land from his grandmother, the Queen, but seemed to be delighted nonetheless with the birthday gift from his father, a brand-new Renault Twingo in dark gray, which he had already taken out for a test drive. The 18-year-old prince got his driver's license in July and is now legally able to drive on his own, making a car the perfect gift to mark the special occasion.
