The drama in the lead up to the royal wedding would be hard to forget, but in case you need a refresher, Meghan Markle's father, Thomas Markle Sr., was supposed to walk her down the aisle, but after the stress of being outed for staging paparazzi photos led to a heart attack, he couldn't make it.

There was some question as to whether Meghan would walk herself down the aisle, or be given away by her mother, Doria Ragland. But in the end, she was accompanied by her soon-to-be father-in-law, Prince Charles.

At the time, Meghan announced via a statement on Twitter that her father would sadly "not be attending our wedding." She also said, "I have always cared for my father and hope he can be given the space he needs to focus on his health."

Now, Prince Harry is opening up about the moment he asked his father to walk his fiancée down the aisle.

Did you know about the drama before the royal wedding?

"I asked him to and I think he knew it was coming and he immediately said, 'Yes, of course, I’ll do whatever Meghan needs and I’m here to support you,'" Harry reveals in the new documentary Prince, Son and Heir: Charles at 70, which airs on BBC One in the UK on Thursday.

"For him that’s a fantastic opportunity to step up and be that support, and you know he’s our father so of course he’s gonna be there for us."

Despite some of his less-than-kind comments about the royal family, Meghan's father was glad that Prince Charles could stand in for him. At the time, he told TMZ that he was "honored and grateful" to Harry's father for walking his daughter down the aisle.

On the day of the wedding, as Charles and Meghan approached Harry, the groom greeted his dad by saying, "Thank you, Pa."

“You’ve gotta say thank you. Just because he’s my father that doesn’t mean I can just sort of go, 'Okay, that’s all, I’ll take it from here,'" Harry says of the sweet moment in the documentary before clarifying.

"Err, no, that is what I wanted to say but erm…and I was very grateful for him to be able to do that."

Watching the wedding on tape after the fact, Camilla too, noticed the sweet interaction between father and son. "I think that was very touching, sitting where I was, you couldn’t hear what he said," the Duchess says in the program. "But afterwards watching it on the television, I… I think it was a very… it was a lovely gesture."
