Prince Harry and Meghan Markle Ask for Donations to Charity in Lieu of Wedding Gifts

Because they certainly aren't registered at Bed Bath & Beyond.

It's hard enough buying wedding gifts for the average bride and groom. What price point is appropriate? Do I stick to the registry or go rogue? But concerns like these are nothing compared to what guests invited to the royal wedding might have. Because no matter how nice that stainless steel trash can is, it just won't cut it for an actual prince.

Fortunately for those would-be shoppers, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have asked for donations in lieu of gifts.

This morning, Kensington Palace confirmed the news with a Tweet that reads, "Prince Harry & Ms. Meghan Markle are incredibly grateful for the goodwill they have received since their engagement, & have asked that anyone who might wish to mark the occasion of their wedding considers giving to charity, instead of sending a gift."

The link goes to a webpage outlining the charities Meghan and Harry have chosen to shine a spotlight on in the weeks before their wedding.

According to the site, "Prince Harry and Ms. Markle do not have any formal relationships with the charities chosen. The couple has chosen charities which represent a range of issues that they are passionate about, including sport for social change, women's empowerment, conservation, the environment, homelessness, HIV, and the Armed Forces. Many of these are small charities, and the couple is pleased to be able to amplify and shine a light on their work."

The organizations include CHIVA, the Children's HIV Association; Crisis, the national charity for homeless people in the U.K.; the Myna Mahila Foundation, which supports women in Mumbai's slums with professional assistance and affordable menstruation products; Scotty's Little Soldiers, a bereavement charity for children who have lost a parent who died while serving in the British armed forces;StreetGames, a children's health and sports group, which Meghan and Harry visited in Wales earlier this year; Surfers Against Sewage, a conservation charity; and the Wilderness Foundation UK, which promotes the benefits of nature.

As Harpers Bazaar UK pointed out, that's exactly what the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge did when they wed back in 2011, and given Prince Harry and Markle's extensive charitable work, odds are we'll see them follow in Will and Kate's footsteps.

"Having been touched by the goodwill shown them since the announcement of their engagement, Prince William and Miss Middleton have asked that anyone who might wish to give them a wedding gift consider giving instead to a charitable fund," read a statement from Clarence House at the time.

"Many of the charities are little known, without existing royal patronage, and undertake excellent work within specific communities. They are charities that have a particular resonance with Prince William and Miss Middleton and reflect issues in which the couple have been particularly interested in their lives to date."

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle plan to wed this May at St. George's Chapel in front of a crowd of about 600 guests.
