This fall, Prince Charles will serve as the British royal family's representative at the Ceremony of Enthronement for Japan's Emperor Naruhito.

Clarence House announced the trip, which will take place from October 22-23, this week, sharing that the Prince of Wales will visit Japan "on behalf of Her Majesty The Queen," and that the trip will also serve a diplomatic function. While in Tokyo, Charles will also take part in a number of events to "celebrate British-Japanese connections."

Charles has visited Japan several times, with the most recent trip being in 2008, with his wife Camilla. He also previously traveled to the country with Princess Diana in 1986.

Emperor Naruhito ascended to the throne earlier this year, following the abdication of his father, Emperor Akihito.

“In acceding to the throne, I swear that I will reflect deeply on the course followed by His Majesty the emperor emeritus and bear in mind the path trodden by past emperors, and will devote myself to self-improvement,” Naruhito said at the time.

He also promised to "fulfill my responsibility as the symbol of the State and of the unity of the people of Japan, while always turning my thoughts to the people and standing with them."

Multiple royals from Europe are expected to attend the event, as are U.S. Vice President Mike Pence and Chinese Vice President Wang Qishan, but a full list of attendees has yet to be announced. We'll be sure to update as soon as we know more.
