Ring the alarm, because a North American politician has just committed an exceptional faux pas. The political scuffle is, of course, over Canadian Governor General David Johnston breaching traditional protocol by touching Queen Elizabeth on the elbow, during a Canada 150 celebration in London.

The touch that launched a thousand tittering gasps is the latest scandal affecting Canadian politics, as Johnston's well-intentioned action accidentally set off a minor etiquette firestorm across the pond. As reported by Time, one British newspaper went with the fiery headline, "Hands off!"

According to Johnston, he was merely trying to act the gentleman. In an interview with CBC News, he insisted:

"I'm certainly conscious of the protocol. I was just anxious to be sure there was no stumbling on the steps.

It's a little bit awkward, that descent from Canada House to Trafalgar Square, and there was a carpet that was a little slippy, and so I thought perhaps it was appropriate to breach protocol just to be sure that there was no stumble."

He later tweeted: "Sharon and I were honoured to mark #Canada150 alongside The Queen and The Duke of Edinburgh @CanadaHouse in #London. @RoyalFamily"

Notice how his tweet doesn't include any photos of his over-reaching touch! As some parts of Canada say, quelle horreur:

That this happened after he'd quite carefully pulled an "air arm" around the Queen...

...and after he got his formal royal handshake...

...is no matter.

The official royal website shares that there are "no obligatory codes of behavior when meeting The Queen." Meanwhile, in America, Texas continues to work toward effectively banning abortions in the state, and the president is reportedly seeking out the limits of presidential pardons.
