Prince Philip Is the Most Popular Royal Among Palace Staffers According to The Crown's Matt Smith

Plus, what he really thinks of Tobias Menzies taking over the role.

Matt Smith may have said goodbye to the role of Prince Philip (Tobias Menzies will play the Queen's husband in seasons three and four of The Crown), but that doesn't mean he's done talking about the royal.

Smith is nominated for an Emmy for his portrayal, and in a new interview with Variety he revealed that Prince Philip is quite popular among the staff of Buckingham Palace. "All the research I did found him to be brilliantly funny, very clever, very popular. In the royal house he’s the most popular of all of them. If you’ve talked to any of the staff, Philip’s the one they all love really," he said.

"I think more than a lot of them, he’s a bit more of a man of the people," Smith continued.

"The royal protocol hasn’t dogged him in quite the same way his whole life and there’s a sort of rebellion in him and a naughtiness and a cheekiness. I think he’s quite affable and open by all accounts with the staff. They all love him."

Smith also said that he thinks Menzies is "a good bit of casting," and shared that he's pleased to move on from the show."I pass it on with a smile and a good luck. I’d rather be doing two years on something than seven...It’s all about Olivia Colman and Tobias Menzies now."

What do you think of Tobias Menzies as Prince Philip?

Perfect! I can't wait to see him in season 3.

I'm not sure. He'll always be Frank Randall to me.

In an earlier conversation with James Corden, Smith said that he hadn't given Menzies too much advice about playing the famous Duke of Edinburgh, but simply recommended a book, "I told him a good book to read by Philip Eade called Young Prince, which is very good.

Smith also joked, "God, make sure they pay you enough … and make sure it's even," referring to the gender pay gap scandal that erupted when it was made public that Smith earned more per episode than Claire Foy, who played the Queen to his Philip.

Watch that interview below:

The Crown will return in 2019 with an entirely new cast, and while Netflix has already released a few stills of season three, we have yet to see Menzies as Philip.

"Thanks for all the messages hoping for a first image of me as Philip, fear not, its coming," the actor wrote on Twitter. "We just wanna get just the right image, one that will whet your appetites, watch this space."
