Kensington Palace has responded to the bombshell news that Meghan Markle's father, Thomas Markle Sr., will not be attending the royal wedding this weekend.

Up until a week ago, Meghan's father had been planning to be there at St. George's Chapel in Windsor on Saturday. In a press briefing from May 4, Kensington Palace confirmed, "Mr. Markle will walk his daughter down the aisle of St George's Chapel. Ms. Markle is delighted to have her parents by her side on this important and happy occasion."

But earlier today, TMZ reported that Markle is no longer attending the royal wedding due to both "the fallout over selling photos of himself" preparing for his daughter's marriage, and a heart attack, which he suffered last week.

"He's now decided not to go because he doesn't want to embarrass the Royal Family or his daughter," reads the TMZ story.

Vanity Fair spoke with TMZ reporter Sean Mandell and confirmed that he spoke with Thomas Markle via text and phone call.

Initially, a Kensington Palace spokesperson responded to a query about Markle from a Reuters reporter with "We have got nothing on this at the moment."

However, now they have issued a longer, more formal statement about the matter, neither confirming nor denying that the bride's father would be in attendance on Saturday.

"This is a deeply personal moment for Ms. Markle in the days before her wedding," reads the memo. "She and Prince Harry ask again for understanding and respect to be extended to Mr. Markle in this difficult situation."

At this point, it is still somewhat unclear whether or not Markle will be at the wedding, though the statement seems to imply that he will not be there. We'll be sure to update as soon as we know more.
