The Wall Street Journal is getting into the college ranking game, and its inaugural list just launched with quite a surprise.

Six of the eight Ivy League schools rank in the top 10 on a list it released recently with Times Higher Education. But Harvard and Princeton, ranked numbers one and two in the most recent U.S. News & World Report ranking, are not at the top. There you'll find Columbia University (above), which tied for five on the U.S. News list and didn't even crack the top ten in a list recently released by Niche, an educational data company.

The WSJ/THE ranking is based on four categories: student outcomes (e.g. salaries after graduation), resources (e.g. academic spending), environment (e.g. racial and ethnic diversity of faculty and students), and engagement (e.g. teaching and interactions with faculty and students).

Here are the Ivy League universities, ranked according to their placement on the full list:

1. Columbia University, New York, New York

2. University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

3. Yale University, New Haven, Connecticut

4. Harvard University, Cambridge, Massachusetts

5. Princeton University, Princeton, New Jersey

6. Cornell University, Ithaca, New York

7. Dartmouth College, Hanover, New Hampshire

8. Brown University, Providence, Rhode Island
