Elton John Defends Prince Harry and Meghan Markle Amid Criticism Over Using Private Jet
Over the past few days, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex have been the subject of criticism following news that they traveled via private jet to Nice for a vacation with their son Archie.
Given that Prince Harry has been quite vocal about the issue of climate change, some people saw their behavior as hypocritical.
Now, the Sussexes' close family friend Elton John has come to their defense on social media, revealing that Harry, Meghan, and Archie had been staying at his home in France last week.
"I am deeply distressed by today’s distorted and malicious account in the press surrounding the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s private stay at my home in Nice last week," John said in a lengthy Twitter thread.
"Prince Harry’s Mother, Diana Princess Of Wales was one of my dearest friends. I feel a profound sense of obligation to protect Harry and his family from the unnecessary press intrusion that contributed to Diana’s untimely death."
The "Yellow Brick Road" singer also pointed out that he and his husband David were the ones that provided the Sussexes with the jet, and that the travel method was carbon neutral.
"To support Prince Harry’s commitment to the environment, we ensured their flight was carbon neutral, by making the appropriate contribution to Carbon Footprint™," he wrote, ending the thread with a request to the media:
"I highly respect and applaud both Harry and Meghan’s commitment to charity and I’m calling on the press to cease these relentless and untrue assassinations on their character that are spuriously crafted on an almost daily basis."
Harry and Meghan are both currently on a break from their public royal duties. While the Duchess's maternity leave is expected to last a few more weeks, royal fans will see Harry on August 24 at Wembley Stadium. Harry, who is the patron of the Rugby Football League, will be attending the Rugby League Challenge Cup Final later this week.
