Princess Diana—then Diana Spencer—and Prince Charles barely knew each other before they were married, CBS's upcoming primetime special reveals. Produced by the 48 Hours team and anchored by Gayle King, Princess Diana: Her Life, Her Death, The Truth will explore Diana's legacy, the night of her death, and her much-publicized troubled marriage.

"Charles and Diana had only been together—literally, as in really met—twelve times before they got married," Susan Zirinsky, senior executive producer on the two-hour special, told ELLE.com. This is one of several surprising revelations about their marriage contained in the special. Despite their short courtship and their 1996 divorce, Zirinsky says that the royal couple had a true connection: "[Diana's friend] Lana Marks tells us that towards the end, Diana told her, 'I really have only loved one man, and that's Charles.'"

The CBS special, which is one of several forthcoming documentaries that will mark the 20th anniversary of Diana's death, will also focus heavily on how her legacy has lived on through her sons, William and Harry. Following the recent launch of the princes' Heads Together campaign, designed to boost awareness and reduce stigma around mental health, Zirinsky says that she "re-ordered" the special to emphasize "the legacy that the princes have carried on. I felt that Diana came to realize that her work was empowering to her, and that she saw there could be a purpose to her life. She may not have had the crown, but I think she showed the world that power doesn't come from a crown—it comes from your heart."
