As BBC reporters are gearing up for an impending announcement from Buckingham Palace in the next couple of days, speculations have been circulating the Internet over as to what the big proclamation might be.

A royal source has told the Daily Star that a meeting was held today among the royal household. The last time an emergency meeting was held among the royal households, it was declared shortly after that Prince Philip was retiring from his duties, so one can expect an announcement of that importance. While we wait for official word from the Palace and the royal Twitter account, here are possible events that they could be revealing:

Most media outlets have already reported that the announcement is likely the imminent engagement of Suits actress Meghan Markle and Prince Harry, who is fifth in line to the throne. This assumption comes from news that Markle has reportedly left  the television show that brought her fame. She has also been spotted house hunting in London, which she has been frequenting the past year. She’s was spotted with Prince Harry at the Invictus Games last  September and has reportedly met Queen Elizabeth, which is a milestone for any potential wife of the prince.

Some reports, on the other hand, say the Palace might announce the Queen's retirement from royal duties, which could mean Prince Charles will take over as heir apparent. In 1947, the Queen has expressed her desire to remain as monarch as long as she would live, but it’s possible she now wants to retire alongside her husband, Prince Philip. It was just during the recent Remembrance Sunday service that Queen Elizabeth allowed Prince Charles to place a wreath in her stead, breaking with tradition. Even though she was present, she chose to look on from the balcony to accompany the Duke of Edinburgh.

If the Queen doesn’t abdicate, but would like to relinquish a bulk of her royal duties, Her Majesty can assign Charles as Prince Regent, which will give him the monarch’s duties without passing on the title and making him King just yet.

Whatever the big announcement may be it’s sure to change the dynamics in the royal family.
