Barbara Bush and Craig Coyne tied the knot in Kennebunkport, Maine, on October 7, just four months after the screenwriter proposed to the former first daughter. But the couple had a really good reason for rushing down the aisle — they wanted to make sure Barbara's 94-year-old grandfather would attend.

“We actually would have gotten married the next week if we could have,” Barbara told People. “We just thought, let’s try to do it soon. We knew we wanted to be married—we’d already made that decision—so we didn’t need months of an engagement.”

The 36-year-old said her grandmother's death in April was a big part of their decision to speed up the wedding.

“Craig didn’t get to meet my grandmother," Barbara said. "I thought there would be plenty of time for that to happen.”

“That’s the one thing about waiting," she continued. “You can have this great career and this great life. But, of course, the older you get, you lose people that you love.”

Barbara's grandfather, former President George H.W. Bush, has had declining health for several years. In May, he was hospitalized for low blood pressure and fatigue, and was diagnosed in 2012 with a form of Parkinson's disease that forces him to use a motorized scooter or wheelchair.

However, Barbara's fears did not come true, and her grandfather was able to be right by her side at her wedding. The couple got married in Maine because that is where the former president resides, and they even spent some quality time with him leading up to the big day.

"It was just us three—quiet and beautiful," Barbara said of their summer together. "I would read to him. While he napped, Craig and I would go on walks, then dress my grandfather up and take him out for martinis and oysters.”
