Michelin Just Launched Its First Cantonese Cuisine Food Guide

This is the first time in its 118-year history that Michelin chose to highlight a specific cuisine.

Michelin has just revealed The Michelin Guide to Fine Cantonese Food, its latest edition of Michelin Guide which features one of the world’s most acclaimed styles of cooking. This is the first time in its 118-year history that the prestigious dining authority has chosen to highlight a specific cuisine rather than a particular geographic area.

Proving its inspectors’ ability to appreciate diverse cuisines through a universal criteria, this special edition serves as a tribute to Cantonese cuisine, which has lured connoisseurs and inspired gastronomy in numerous parts of the world. 

The Guide features a total of 291 establishments from 15 countries, 69 of which are from Asia alone. The list includes 78 restaurants that already hold Michelin stars; 62 Bib Gourmand restaurants, purposely awarded to those offering exceptionally good food at moderate prices; and 151 restaurants holding a Michelin Plate award, given to restaurants serving remarkably quality dishes.

Instinctively, included are four restauran which hold the most-coveted three Michelin star rating. These are The Eight in the Grand Lisboa Hotel in Macau, Lung King Heen and T'ang Court in Hong Kong, and Le Palais in Taipei.

The guide was launched in an exclusive partnership with leading Chinese automaker GAC Motor. According to Huang Yongsheng, Vice President of GAC Motor, this cooperation was done in a pursuit to promote the culinary goodness of China while creating an exceptional travel and dining experience for people from all parts of the world. 

Analogously, it may be remembered that The Michelin Guide started as a marketing gimmick for the tire company. Brothers Édouard and André Michelin published a travel guide for people to drive more and therefore boost demand for tires. The rating system for restaurants was initially introduced by giving good quality restaurants a single star and was further refined with the introduction of the now-reputed three-star system. Now, one star represents very good cuisine in its category; two stars as serving excellent cuisine worth a detour; and three stars indicating exceptional cuisine that is worth a special journey.
